In 2002, McPeek took both races when Harlan’s Holiday won the Toyota Blue Grass and Take Charge Lady captured the Central Bank Ashland (when the two races were a week apart; the Toyota Blue Grass was moved to opening Saturday, the day of the Central Bank Ashland, in 2015). With a two-turn turf maiden win at Saratoga at age two, a dirt win via disqualification at Fair Grounds in January, and now a Polytrack score in the $100,000 John Battaglia Memorial S. at Turfway, It's Your Nickel (Dialed In), doesn't exactly fit the traditional Derby contender profile. But wow, was he full of run- -careening between, and then off the heels of rivals to close from seventh at the quarter pole--when accelerating to blast clear by 6 1/2 lengths on Saturday."He was farther back than I wanted to be," said winning jockey James Graham. "He wasn't handling the track real well at first so I just let him go on, but once he got his head down and got into a rhythm on the backstretch, he was traveling beautifully."  Either Turfway's Mar. 25 GIII Spiral S. or the Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds (where It's Your Nickel is stabled) are logical next-race options for the winner.

  • McPeek Racing Update
    02/08/2017

Spring is right around the corner and the stable is heating up. We had our first win of 2017 at the Fairgrounds with It's Your Nickel for owners Harold Lerner, Wayne Cutler, Jack Cohen, Nehoc Stables, and Magdalena Racing. It's Your Nickel will run again in the Grade II $400,000 Risen Star Stakes on February 25th. Keeping in Stakes company will be filly Perfect Wife running for Fern Circle Stables on February 11th at Oaklawn Park in the $125,000 Martha Washington Stakes.

I am extremely excited about this year's crop of 2-year-olds in training. In fact, this could be the most talented crop I've ever trained. As they begin their workout program, we continually evaluate talent and disposition of each colt and filly while adjusting each horses' training path individually.

To those of you that would like to be a part of the excitement, there are still a few shares available for horses that I purchased during last fall's yearling sales. Let me know if you're interested in joining the excitement.

Make a note in your calendar - Saturday, April 22nd. Please join us for the Magdalena Farm's Spring Open House in Lexington. The morning event happens from 10 am to noon with discussions on conformation, training philosophy, co-ownership of horses, legal issues, and financial matters as they relate to horse ownership. After live racing at Keeneland, we will host a barbecue at the farm - a very informal evening leading up to Kentucky Derby and Oaks weekend. If you would like to attend, simply respond here!!  Don't be shy if you are new to the sport, this is our specialty in helping people learn about Thoroughbreds and racing them.

    See you at the Races,

    Ken McPeek
